In 1903, Richard Hellmann, a young man from Vetschau, Germany moved to New York city where he married his first wife; Margaret Vossberg, daughter of a deli owner just a year later. His in-laws had inspired him to start a deli business of his own where he developed his first ready-made mayonnaise that became a hit among his customers. It became so popular that other stores began purchasing in bulks.
From Mayonnaise to Salad Dressing Range
In 1913, just 10 years after coming to New York, Richard Hellmann successfully built a factory to produce his famous mayonnaise in even greater quantities and began selling it under Hellmann's Blue Ribbon Mayonnaise before the company was incorporated as Richard Hellmann, Inc,. Richard Hellmann explored other products but eventually decided to concentrate on Mayonnaise before expanding the business to produce other salad dressings in 1920.
The deli that would become our birthplace opened its doors right in the very heart of New York: Columbus Avenue, Manhattan. And Richard began creating his now legendary mayonnaise. Jars were filled to the brim with a delicious blend of ingredients picked to create the ultimate creamy texture and taste.
